Tokio Marine America's mission as a Good Company is to provide Anshin (safety, security, and peace of mind) to all of our clients and to the general public.
Even with all the awareness around driving distracted, it remains a serious issue in the United States. Nine (9) people die every day in distracted driving accidents, and 13% of all crashes involve a distracted driver.
The roads are filled with a high concentration of drivers, and unfortunately, many of them continue to make the dangerous decision to drive distracted. Distracted driving comes in many forms, whether it be manual or visual distractions (tasks that require removing hands from the wheel or eyes from the road), cognitive distractions (tasks that take the driver’s attention away from the road), or a combination of all of them.
The most prominent cause of distracted driving is cell phone use, as the constant desire to text, consume media, or interact on social media takes drivers’ attention off the road in a multitude of ways. What’s alarming is that 60% of drivers admit to driving distracted, while 39% of high school student drivers admit to texting while driving. Drivers know that they are driving distracted, but continue to do it anyway. New technology and infotainment systems in vehicles are also adding to our driving distractions.
There is a misnomer among drivers that infotainment dashboards and hands-free technology systems must be safe if car manufacturers are adding them, but in fact, they are designed more for convenience than driver safety. Drivers also believe by using a hands-free device they are making the safe choice. This is not the case, as these technologies cause both cognitive and visual distractions.
It is up to us to help enact change and play a part in saving lives by ending distracted driving. Tokio Marine America proudly supports EndDD.org to bring awareness and end distracted driving.
